IMPORTANT — PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING: The Sentiero dei Ducati is classified by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and its regional authorities as a trekking route — an official hiking trail — rather than a walking path suitable for the general public. It is not a tourist route.

The distinction matters practically. Several stages require sustained walking above 1,500m on exposed terrain, navigation competence beyond following waymarks alone, appropriate mountain footwear (ankle-support boots, not trail runners), and physical conditioning beyond what a standard walking holiday involves.

Borgoway will not accept bookings for this route without an honest conversation about your fitness, experience, and equipment. This is not liability hedging — it is genuine safety advice. The route passes through areas with limited rescue access. Conditions change quickly in the high Apennines.

If you have completed routes like the Via degli Dei and the GR20 (Corsica) and are looking for a more challenging Italian alternative, the Sentiero dei Ducati is exceptional. If you are new to mountain trekking, please consider one of our three other routes first.

Overview

The Sentiero dei Ducati (the Dukes' Trail) connects Reggio Emilia to Sarzana on the Ligurian coast, following ancient trade and military routes across the Northern Apennines for 175 kilometres. It takes its name from the rival duchies — Este, Farnese, Malaspina — whose territories the route passes through.

This is not a route for general walkers. The Sentiero dei Ducati is classified as a mountain trekking route by Italian standards, not a tourist walking path. Daily stages average 26km with 800–1,100m of ascent; several stages spend extended time above 1,500m on exposed terrain; navigation skills are required on a number of sections.

Borgoway offers the Sentiero dei Ducati for walkers who have completed long-distance routes at the level of the GR20 or equivalent and are looking for a demanding Italian mountain experience that goes beyond the more accessible Apennine cammini. We will not accept a booking for this route without a direct conversation about your experience and fitness.

For those with the right background, it is exceptional. The Lunigiana section in particular — high moorland, alpine lakes, Bronze Age archaeology, Malaspina castles — is among the finest walking in Italy that most Italians have never heard of.

Reggio Emilia → Canossa

The opening stage of the Sentiero dei Ducati immediately establishes that this is a different category of route. The long stage from Reggio Emilia to the castle rock of Canossa requires 9 hours of sustained walking with nearly 1,000m of cumulative ascent — more than any individual stage of the Via degli Dei.

The destination justifies the effort. Canossa is one of the most historically charged sites in medieval European history: it was here in 1077 that the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV stood barefoot in the snow for three days seeking absolution from Pope Gregory VII. The 'Walk to Canossa' entered the European political vocabulary as a phrase for public humiliation; arriving here on foot, by a different route, has its own resonance.

This stage is not recommended without proper preparation. Experienced trekkers should ensure they have appropriate footwear and navigate carefully: the route crosses several ridge lines and the path can be indistinct in sections.

Points of interest

  • Castello di Canossa

The ruins of the 10th-century Lombard fortress associated with Countess Matilda of Tuscany and the pivotal events of the Investiture Controversy in 1077.

Canossa → Cerreto Laghi

The most demanding stage of the entire route ascends from the Reggio Emilia foothills into the high Apennines, crossing above 1,500m and spending several hours on exposed mountain terrain. Trekking experience is essential; this is not an easy day even for experienced hill walkers.

Navigation requires map and compass skills in addition to trail markings — the route crosses several unmarked sections above the treeline where the official waymarks are infrequent. All Borgoway walkers receive detailed stage notes with GPS coordinates for this stage.

The reward is the arrival at Cerreto Laghi, a high-altitude lake plateau at 1,262m — a landscape that feels genuinely alpine and far removed from any association with tourist Italy. The rifugio here is one of the best on the route.

Points of interest

  • Laghi di Cerreto

Alpine lakes at 1,262m in a high moorland landscape, surrounded by beech forest and open ridge — one of the most remote and unspoiled environments on the entire route.

Stage 3 / 4

Cerreto Laghi → Linari

26 kmDistance

−1020 mDescent

The long descent from the high Apennines toward the Lunigiana begins here. The route drops significantly in altitude over the day, transitioning from alpine moorland through beech forest to the chestnut-covered lower slopes above the valley of the Magra.

The Lunigiana — the territory of the ancient Liguri Apuani tribe — begins to make itself felt through the archaeology of the day: dolmens, menhirs, and carved stone figures known as 'Stele Lunigianesi' appear on the hillsides. This carved stone tradition extends back 4,000 years and has no precise parallel elsewhere in Italy.

Points of interest

  • Stele Lunigianesi

Carved anthropomorphic stone figures dating from the Copper and Bronze Ages, unique to the Lunigiana region. The trail passes several in situ examples.

Stage 4 / 4

Linari → Sarzana

The final stage descends through the Lunigiana valleys to Sarzana, a walled medieval city at the eastern edge of Liguria that has somehow escaped the tourist attention it deserves. The route passes several Malaspina castles — the ruling dynasty of the Lunigiana — before dropping to the coastal plain.

Sarzana is a worthwhile destination in itself: the medieval centre is intact, the market on Saturdays is one of the best in Liguria, and the proximity to the Cinque Terre means onward travel options are excellent. Many walkers choose to spend an extra night here before continuing to the coast.

Points of interest

  • Fortezza di SarzanelloDetour

A late-14th century hilltop fortress commanding the approaches to the Magra valley, associated with the Malaspina, Castruccio Castracani, and early Napoleonic campaigns.
